Scuba Experience
- I had wanted to SCUBA dive since I was a young boy. I remember faithfully
watching every Jacques Cousteau show and wanting to explore the underwater world.
- However, I was under the impression SCUBA diving was very expensive, so this discouraged
me for a long time. Turns out, after the up-front expense, it is not that much more
expensive than any other sport/outdoor hobby one might choose to spend money on.
- I decided to take my Open Water SCUBA course in 1992 after a trip to Florida. My
wife and I visited the Florida where we enjoyed snorkeling in Key West, Pennecamp and
Biscayne. I wanted to be able to stay under the water longer and observe/interact
with the marine life. I was unable to do so.
- My brother and I signed up for the Open Water course at American Sport Diver in
Kirkland. At that time the store was owned by Kaye Nealy and she had placed a
2-for-1 coupon in the Entertainment '92 coupon book. That drove our decision to use
that store.
- We completed the PADI Open Water course in June of 1992. I was the only student in
the class to get a 100% score on the written test.
I have completed the following courses:
- Open Water Diver - June 1992
- Advanced Open Water Diver - January 1996
- Drysuit Diver - February 1996
- Oxygen First Aid - February 1997
- Rescue Diver - March 1997
- Equipment Specialist - May 1997
- Enriched Air Nitrox - October 1997
- Deep Diver - October 1998
- PADI Master SCUBA Diver - October 1998
- YMCA SLAM Rescue - August 1999
- YMCA Advanced Diver Theory, Phase I - Feb 2000
- YMCA Advanced Diver Theory, Phase II - May 2000
- YMCA Assistant Instructor - Sep 2000

I have logged almost 300 dives All of my diving has been done in the cold water of Puget
Sound and British Columbia. Except for a few instances where I was able to dive in
California and Europe. I have also participated in the DiveQuest program at EPCOT in
Florida. .
After trying the instruction path in Scuba diving (YMCA work) I decided that
being an instructor kind of takes the fun out of diving. It is stressful
having to worry about a bunch of inexperienced divers in the water. So I
have decided not to pursue that course. I will probably take some
technical diving courses when life settles down.
I continue to be a volunteer diver at the Seattle
Aquarium. I work in the Pacific Coral Reef (PCR) Tank.
